Non-Woven
Tier 2 β High PriorityWhy Non-Woven Fabric Plants Need Specialised Compressed Air
Vapi GIDC and South Gujarat host a significant concentration of non-woven fabric manufacturers supplying to the hygiene, medical, packaging and geotextile sectors. Non-woven fabrics β produced by spunbond, meltblown, needle punch and spunlace processes β are used in surgical masks, N95 respirators, diapers, sanitary products, agricultural mulch films, automotive carpet backings and filtration media.
Compressed air in a non-woven plant is not background utility equipment β it is a direct input to the fabric manufacturing process itself. In the spunbond process, high-velocity compressed air jets attenuate (draw and thin) molten polymer filaments immediately after extrusion from the spinnerets. In the meltblown process, ultra-high velocity hot air jets simultaneously draw and cool molten polymer to create fibres of 1β5 microns diameter β the filtration fibres in N95 masks and surgical mask inner layers. The quality of the compressed air and the stability of its pressure directly determine the quality, consistency and filtration performance of the fabric produced.
RR Enterprise serves non-woven manufacturers in Vapi and South Gujarat as Authorised Chicago Pneumatic Compressors Dealer, supplying CP oil-free screw compressors and VFD screw compressors with refrigeration dryers and air treatment systems specifically sized and specified for non-woven fabric production.
Non-Woven Processes β Compressed Air Role by Process Type
Spunbond (SS, SSS, SMS)
Molten polymer (PP or PET) is extruded through spinnerets, then attenuated by high-velocity compressed air jets below the spinneret pack. The air jets draw the filament to the required diameter. Air pressure directly controls filament diameter and fabric basis weight. Pressure fluctuation = basis weight variation = customer rejection.
Meltblown (MB)
Molten polymer is extruded through a meltblown die with air jets on both sides drawing the polymer to 1β5 micron fibres. The high-velocity air also cools and solidifies the fibres. For medical-grade and filtration-grade meltblown, oil contamination from a non-oil-free compressor can compromise the electrostatic filtration efficiency of the fabric. Air failure blocks the meltblown die.
Needle Punch
Fibres are mechanically bonded by thousands of barbed needles punching through the web at high frequency. Compressed air is used for pneumatic cylinders controlling the needle board advance and web feed tensioning. Lower air quality requirement than spunbond or meltblown. Standard compressed air with dryer and filtration.
Spunlace (Hydroentanglement)
Fibres are bonded by high-pressure water jets (not compressed air). Compressed air is used for auxiliary equipment β web tension control, roll handling, pneumatic actuators. Moderate compressed air requirement. Dry air important as the high-humidity spunlace environment makes moisture in instrument air a corrosion concern.
3 Compressed Air Problems Specific to Non-Woven Fabric Manufacturing in Vapi
These problems are unique to non-woven fabric manufacturing. They do not exist in the same form for chemical plants, textile mills or packaging facilities.
Medical Air Is a Medical Gas β the Quality Standard Is Categorically Different from Any Industrial Application
In hospitals and healthcare facilities, compressed air is classified as a medical gas because it is administered directly to patients. Medical air drives ICU ventilators, powers anaesthetic machines in the OT, operates pneumatic surgical instruments, drives nebulizers and is used in medical equipment sterilisation cycles. Oil in medical air creates a direct patient safety hazard β inhaled oil aerosols can cause chemical pneumonitis and lipoid pneumonia in ICU patients who are already on respiratory support. Moisture in medical air can harbour bacterial growth in the ventilator circuit. Particles can block the internal filters of sensitive medical equipment. An oil-lubricated compressor with downstream filters does NOT meet medical air standards β the residual oil risk from a degraded or overdue filter element is unacceptable for patient-administered air. A CP oil-free compressor is the correct and only acceptable solution for medical air generation in any hospital, nursing home or clinic where compressed air is administered to patients. NABL-accredited hospital biomedical engineering audits check for oil-free medical air generation at all accredited hospitals in India.
A Single Compressor Failure in the ICU or OT Is a Patient Safety Emergency, Not a Production Downtime Event
A hospital's medical air system simultaneously supplies ventilators in the ICU, the anaesthetic machine in the OT, pneumatic surgical tools and pneumatically-operated patient beds. Unlike any factory where a compressor failure means production downtime, in a hospital a medical air compressor failure while ICU patients are on ventilator support or while surgery is in progress is a patient safety emergency. Backup plans involve manual bag ventilation of ICU patients, switching OT procedures to intravenous anaesthesia where possible, and activating emergency protocols β all of which place significant stress on clinical staff and create patient risk. Hospital medical air systems must be designed with N+1 redundancy: at least two compressors with automatic switchover so that any single compressor failure is managed automatically without staff intervention. Most small private hospitals and nursing homes in Vapi and South Gujarat do NOT have redundant medical air compressors β they run on single compressors without automatic changeover. RR Enterprise can help design and supply redundant N+1 medical air compressor systems with automatic changeover panels for hospitals in South Gujarat.
Dental Clinics Typically Use Oil-Lubricated Compressors β But the Air Goes Directly Into the Patient's Mouth
Dental clinics use compressed air for high-speed air turbine handpieces (the dental drill), three-in-one syringes (air, water and spray used in the patient's mouth), dental chair-side suction, and air-driven scalers and polishing tools. All of these applications involve compressed air that directly contacts the inside of the patient's mouth. A standard oil-lubricated reciprocating or piston compressor β the most common compressor type used in dental clinics in India β generates compressed air that contains oil aerosols. This oil enters the patient's mouth during dental procedures. Oil contamination in dental air also destroys high-speed turbine handpieces very quickly: the turbine bearings, which spin at 300,000β400,000 RPM, require absolutely clean air β oil and moisture cause the turbine bearings to fail prematurely, reducing turbine life from months to weeks. An oil-free compressor specifically designed for dental clinic applications is the correct solution β both for patient hygiene and for protecting the high-speed turbine investment.
How RR Enterprise Solves Each of These Problems
CP oil-free screw compressor for meltblown process air β no oil in the compression stage. Inherently oil-free output regardless of filter condition or service interval. Eliminates oil contamination of meltblown fibres and preserves the electrostatic filtration efficiency of medical-grade and filtration-grade meltblown non-woven fabric.
The CP VFD Variable Speed Screw Compressor maintains a tighter pressure band than a fixed speed load-unload compressor. Consistent attenuation air pressure = consistent filament diameter = consistent basis weight across the fabric roll. Fewer basis weight rejection rolls and more satisfied hygiene product manufacturing customers.
RR Enterprise provides 24/7 emergency response from our Vapi GIDC base. Engineers reach non-woven plants in Vapi and South Gujarat within 2β4 hours on any shift. We also recommend keeping oil separator elements, air filters and oil on site at the plant for same-day compressor restoration.
Products We Supply to Non-Woven Manufacturers in Vapi and South Gujarat
CHICAGO PNEUMATIC (AUTHORISED CP DEALER)
For meltblown process air. No oil in the compression stage β inherently oil-free output that preserves electrostatic filtration efficiency of medical-grade meltblown fibres. For meltblown non-woven manufacturers in Vapi supplying to medical disposables companies, the CP oil-free screw compressor is the only acceptable solution for meltblown die air supply.
For spunbond attenuation air and general plant compressed air supply. Maintains tighter pressure band than fixed speed for consistent basis weight control. Also saves 20β35% electricity as line demand varies between production and changeover periods. Preferred for spunbond facilities with variable demand.
For needle punch and spunlace lines where compressed air demand is relatively constant during production. Lower capital cost than VFD for facilities where demand is genuinely constant. Also suitable as secondary compressed air for general plant utility where a VFD compressor handles the process air.
Essential for all non-woven process compressed air. Moisture in spunbond attenuation air causes fibre breakage and web draping issues. Moisture in meltblown die air affects fibre formation. In spunlace, the high-humidity environment makes dry instrument air even more important for actuator reliability.

How Compressed Air Is Used in Non-Woven Fabric Manufacturing
Spunbond Fibre Attenuation
High-velocity compressed air jets below the spinneret pack attenuate molten polymer filaments to the required diameter immediately after extrusion. Air pressure directly controls filament diameter and fabric basis weight. A 0.3-0.5 bar pressure drop during production causes measurable basis weight variation β the primary customer rejection criterion for hygiene product manufacturers. CP VFD screw compressor for tight pressure control. Refrigeration dryer to prevent moisture in attenuation air from causing fibre breakage.
Meltblown Die Air β Medical Grade
Ultra-high velocity air jets on both sides of the meltblown die draw molten polymer to 1-5 micron fibres simultaneously cooling and solidifying them. Oil in the die air coats the fibres and neutralises electrostatic charge β reducing filtration efficiency below rated specification for N95 and surgical mask applications. Air failure during production blocks die holes with solidified polymer, requiring hours to clear. CP oil-free screw compressor is mandatory for medical-grade meltblown.
Needle Punch Line Pneumatics
Needle punch lines use compressed air for pneumatic cylinders controlling needle board advance, web feed roll tensioning, and web transfer between process sections. These are moderate-duty, cyclic compressed air applications at 6β8 bar. Lower air quality requirement than meltblown or spunbond process air, but dry, filtered air prevents corrosion in needle board actuators and ensures consistent needle advance control for uniform needle punch density.
Spunlace Auxiliary Pneumatics
In spunlace (hydroentanglement), fabric bonding is done by high-pressure water jets, not compressed air. But compressed air is used for web tension control cylinders, roll handling actuators and pneumatic positioning of water jet modules. The high-humidity environment in a spunlace plant (water mist from the hydroentanglement process) makes instrument air dryness critical β moisture in instrument air headers in a spunlace plant corrodes actuator internals rapidly.
Roll Slitting and Winding
The parent roll of non-woven fabric coming off the production line is slit into narrower rolls by slitting lines using pneumatic core chucks and winder roll tensioning systems. The roll handling station uses compressed air for core pusher actuators, roll tension brakes and automated core insertion. These are utility-grade compressed air applications at 6β8 bar sharing the main plant compressed air supply.
Fabric Finishing β Calendering and Lamination
Some non-woven fabrics undergo calendering (heat and pressure bonding between calendar rolls) or lamination (bonding with a film layer). Compressed air actuators control the nip pressure on calendar rolls and the tension in lamination systems. The compressed air here controls product properties β calendar roll pressure determines fabric softness and thickness, which are customer specifications for hygiene and medical products.
